Steve Smith Breaks World Record for Most Test Catches as Australia Take Control Against South Africa
Australian stalwart Steve Smith etched his name into cricket history on Sunday, breaking the all-time world record for the most career catches by a non-wicketkeeper in Test cricket. Smith achieved the milestone on day three of the first Test against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban, leading Australia into a commanding position as the tourists extended their overall lead to 139 runs.
Smith showcased his trademark sharpness in the slips by pouching four catches during South Africa's innings, lifting his career tally to 223 Test catches. His fielding masterclass proved vital in dismantling South Africa's batting lineup, which was bowled out for 284 in reply to Australia’s formidable first-innings total of 390. The record-breaking dismissal arrived when Smith held onto a catch to remove South African captain Temba Bavuma off the bowling of off-spinner Nathan Lyon.
With a handy 106-run first-innings cushion, Australia came out aggressively in their second innings to widen the deficit. Openers Nic Maddinson and Travis Head launched a brisk assault, putting together an unbeaten 33-run partnership in just 5.4 overs before deteriorating light forced an early halt to proceedings for the third consecutive day.
Maddinson, who had endured a painstaking 33-ball duck in the first essay, showed intent right from the start. The left-hander struck two boundaries off Marco Jansen in the opening over before launching all-rounder Wiaan Mulder for a massive six, remaining unbeaten on 17 alongside Head’s fluent 10 not out. Australia will look to capitalise on their momentum when play resumes on day four to set the Proteas a steep fourth-innings chase.
