Sahibzada Farhan Leads Pakistan to Four-Wicket Victory Over Sri Lanka in T20I Opener
Newly appointed Pakistan Twenty20 International captain Sahibzada Farhan marked his leadership debut with a scintillating 89 to guide his side to a four-wicket victory against Sri Lanka at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Friday. The hosts successfully chased down a challenging target of 183 with seven deliveries to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Farhan's aggressive innings laid the platform for the clinical run chase, validating team management's decision to hand him the captaincy ahead of the home campaign.
The Pakistan skipper unleashed an array of dynamic strokeplay, striking 10 boundaries and four towering sixes across his 53-ball stay at the crease. He was ably supported by young left-hander Maaz Sadaqat, who delivered under pressure by smashing his maiden T20I half-century with 50 off just 29 deliveries. Together, the pair stitched a decisive 92-run stand for the second wicket, shifting the momentum away from Sri Lanka and guiding the Green Shirts to 187-6 in 18.5 overs.
Pakistan established early dominance in their pursuit as Farhan combined with veteran opener Fakhar Zaman to post a blazing 54-run opening partnership within five overs. Fakhar set a brisk tempo with four boundaries in his 13-ball 21 before falling to seamer Eshan Malinga in the final over of the powerplay. The early wicket did little to slow Pakistan's scoring rate, as the hosts charged to an imposing 70-1 by the end of the first six overs to leave the visitors under immense pressure.
Earlier in the evening, Sri Lanka opted to bat first and posted a competitive 182-8 in their allotted 20 overs, driven almost single-handedly by a counter-attacking 91 from opener Lahiru Udara. Despite Udara's lone resistance, Pakistan's bowling attack maintained disciplined control through key intervals. Express pacer Naseem Shah claimed 3-36, while debutant Mohammad Imran produced an exceptional spell of 2-21 in his four overs, backed up by solitary wickets from Razaullah, Saim Ayub, and Shadab Khan.
Although late wickets from Malinga and spinner Maheesh Theekshana caused minor tremors in the closing overs, middle-order batter Khawaja Nafay ensured there were no late slip-ups with an unbeaten 12 to cross the finish line. The victory provides Pakistan with vital confidence following their recent Asian Games heartbreak, while giving Farhan an ideal start to his captaincy tenure. Both sides will square off again on Sunday at the same venue for the second T20I.
