Amos Kipruto Clinches Maiden Chicago Marathon Title as Hawi Feysa Defends Crown
Kenya’s Amos Kipruto produced a masterclass in long-distance racing on Sunday, dominating an elite field to capture his first-ever Chicago Marathon victory, while Ethiopia’s Hawi Feysa successfully retained her women’s title in dominant fashion. The 34-year-old Kenyan crossed the line in a blistering personal best of 2:01:09, claiming long-awaited redemption after finishing third in 2024 and runner-up in 2025.
Kipruto delivered his race-defining move at mile 21, launching a decisive surge to break away from defending champion and pre-race favourite Jacob Kiplimo. Once clear of the Ugandan standout, Kipruto powered solo through the remaining miles under cool, sunny conditions, extending his advantage to cross the line nearly two minutes ahead of the chasing pack. After crossing the tape, an exhausted Kipruto briefly sank to the ground before getting back up with a beaming smile to celebrate his breakthrough triumph.
Reflecting on his journey to the top of the podium, Kipruto spoke candidly about his determination heading into the 48th edition of the race. He explained that after taking third place in 2024 and finishing second in 2025, his mindset for the 2026 contest was entirely uncompromising, describing it as a "win or die" moment to finally seal the elusive crown.
In the women’s division, Hawi Feysa reaffirmed her supremacy over the 26.2-mile distance with a commanding title defense, capping off an electric day of distance running through the streets of Chicago. Kipruto’s milestone victory, paired with Feysa's back-to-back triumph, delivers another historic chapter for the World Marathon Majors showpiece.
