Muneeba Ali Named Pakistan T20I Captain for Sri Lanka Tour
Muneeba Ali Siddiqui has been appointed to lead the Pakistan women's T20I squad for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, stepping in to take charge from regular skipper Fatima Sana. This strategic leadership change is designed to accommodate Fatima Sana’s participation in The Hundred tournament, as she is set to become the first Pakistani woman cricketer to feature in the English franchise competition. While Sana will lead the team during the three-match ODI series, Muneeba Ali will assume the captaincy for the subsequent T20I leg of the tour.
The Pakistan women’s team is scheduled to compete in Hambantota from July 23 to August 4, 2026. The ODI series, which is crucial for the ICC Women's Championship 2025-29, will be held on July 23, 25, and 28, with the T20I matches following on July 31, August 2, and August 4. This series serves as a pivotal opportunity for the team to regroup and test new strategies after their performance in the recent T20 World Cup.
In an effort to revitalize the squad, the selectors have implemented a major overhaul for the T20I format, introducing eight new players to the team. The revamped T20I roster, under the leadership of Muneeba Ali, features a blend of talent including Ayesha Zafar, Eman Naseer, Eyman Fatima, Humna Bilal, Maham Anees, Momina Riasat, Najiha Alvi, Nashra Sundhu, Saira Jabeen, Shawaal Zulfiqar, Tasmia Rubab, Tuba Hassan, Umm-e-Hani, and Waheeda Akhtar.
The selection committee’s focus appears to be on long-term development, allowing younger talent to gain international experience under Muneeba Ali’s guidance. By integrating fresh players into the T20I setup, Pakistan aims to build a more versatile squad capable of competing at the highest level in future international tournaments. The upcoming matches in Sri Lanka will be the first test for this new-look side as they prepare to adapt to different conditions.
With both the ODI and T20I series presenting different tactical challenges, the tour is being viewed as a significant building block for the remainder of the 2026 cricket season. Fans and experts will be keenly observing how Muneeba Ali handles the added responsibility of captaincy while leading a squad with so many new faces. The team's performance in Sri Lanka will be a major indicator of their progress toward improving their standing in international women's cricket.
