Shubman Gill Emphasizes Need for Improved Fitness Following ODI Series Loss to England
India captain Shubman Gill has highlighted the urgent need for his squad to address ongoing fitness issues if they are to remain serious contenders for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Following India's 27-run defeat to England in the deciding third ODI at Lord's on Sunday, Gill emphasized that the team cannot afford to lose players to injury on such a frequent basis. He noted that "as a group"—comprising both the players and the BCCI medical team—there must be a concerted effort toward "improving fitness" moving forward.
The squad's performance at Lord's was compromised by the inability to field their strongest XI due to a series of injuries among the original 15-man touring party. Among those unavailable for the series decider were Jasprit Bumrah, who suffered an impact injury during the second ODI in Cardiff, and Washington Sundar, who sustained a hamstring injury at the same venue.
Additionally, Harshit Rana remained sidelined with a hamstring issue dating back to the T20I series, while Nitish Kumar Reddy did not make the trip to the UK after picking up a quadriceps injury during the home ODI series against Afghanistan in June.
Gill explained that these persistent injury concerns forced the team management to adjust their combinations, sometimes even at the last minute, disrupting their ability to maintain consistency. As the team looks toward future international campaigns, the captain has made it clear that bolstering squad resilience and player availability will be a top priority to ensure India can compete at the highest level.
